5EFM was the first community radio station on the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula. Established on October 11, 1991, with the call sign 'Encounter FM', broadcasting for just 14 days a year on a wave-length of 89.3MHz from a low-powered transmitter. The station started broadcasting from two caravans, one a studio the other housing transmission equipment, in the grounds of the Victor Harbor TAFE, and our offices were in a number places before a permanent place could be found. A seven year lease was negotiated in 1994 with the Victor Harbor Council for the former Meals on Wheels property at 18 Seaview Road, Victor Harbor. In 1999 a new twenty one year lease was successfully negotiated with the Victor Harbor Council. In 1996, because of popular demand a remote transponder was installed at Strathalbyn to cover the Strathalbyn district transmitting on 94.7MHz. This greatly improved reception in that area. In 1997 the ABA allocated 24hr temporary licence that was renewable every 3 months. In 1998 a second remote transponder was installed in the Normanville/Yankalilla district operating on 88.3MHz. In 2000 it was decided to change the call sign from 'Encounter FM to the ABA call sign of'5EFM'. In December 2002.5EFM was granted a permanent licence (by the then A.B.A.) In 2003 the trading name of 'Radio 5EFM The Sound of the Fleurieu' was registered. In 2008 the Yankalilla transponder frequency was changed from 88.3 to 94.7 (for technical reasons). With 3 transmitters, 5EFM became the only community broadcaster to broadcast right across the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula. 5EFM transmits 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. From 6:30am every morning until 10:00pm with an easy-listening music format with specialised music programs for all ages. From 10:00pm 5EFM crosses to satellite to take, for eight and a half hours, the programs of the Community Radio Network. This provides varied music and other entertainment from other Community Stations across Australia. Our charter as a community broadcaster is to inform, educate and entertain the communities across the Southern Fleurieu Peninsula. More than 80 community organisations, clubs, the three local councils (City of Victor Harbor, Alexandrina and Yankalilla district councils), federal and state members of parliament, government departments and agencies, local emergency services and many other organisations using 5EFM's services to promote and inform the communities with the latest up to date information. As well as state and local news updates when available and updates on state and local weather forecasts. As a community broadcaster, 5EFM is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. |
